The product advertising glossary

What is UGC?

User-generated content is material created by people using or discussing a product. In advertising, “UGC-style” also describes a casual creative format, including commissioned work.

A practical example

A customer independently posting a jacket review is creating UGC. A paid actor reading a brand script is making advertising in a similar visual style.

How to use it

Record who made the asset, how they were compensated, and what usage permission you have. A handheld camera style does not make a scripted endorsement an independent review.

Put it in a creative brief

Write down the event, asset, or workflow you mean by UGC before sharing a brief or report. For campaign measurements, keep the source and reporting window with the number. For creative work, attach an example so the team can assess the same thing.

Explore the creative testing guide, calculate campaign results with the ad metrics calculator, or return to the glossary.
